All Saints Sunday

Introduction

In holy baptism God makes saints out of sinners. In holy communion God forgives the sins of all the saints. In worship today we give thanks for all the saints “who from their labors rest.” In the same breath we petition our God for the strength to hear and to heed the admonitions of Jesus in today’s gospel. Sealed by the Spirit and sustained by the Savior’s body and blood, we live with joy as God gives us breath, to the praise of God’s glory.

GOD WELCOMES ALL

God welcomes all, strangers and friends; God's love is strong and it never ends.

What a Fellowship, What a Joy Divine

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms

1     What a fellowship, what a joy divine,

        leaning on the everlasting arms;

        what a blessedness, what a peace is mine,

        leaning on the everlasting arms.

Refrain

        Leaning, leaning, (Leaning on Jesus, leaning on Jesus,)

        safe and secure from all alarms;

        leaning, leaning, (leaning on Jesus, leaning on Jesus,)

        leaning on the everlasting arms.

2     Oh, how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,

        leaning on the everlasting arms;

        oh, how bright the path grows from day to day,

        leaning on the everlasting arms.  Refrain

3     What have I to dread, what have I to fear,

        leaning on the everlasting arms?

        I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,

        leaning on the everlasting arms.  Refrain

Prayer of the Day

Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

For Such a Time as This

Could it be (could it be) that we were born

for such a time as this?

First Reading: Daniel 7:1-3, 15-18

The book of Daniel was written in the second century BCE, when the Syrian king Antiochus Epiphanes was severely persecuting the Jews. Daniel’s vision of the four beasts proclaims that human kings will come and go, but the kingdom will ultimately belong to God and to God’s people.

During the first year that Belshazzar was king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream. He saw these visions while he was lying on his bed, and he wrote what he had dreamed. Daniel said, “I saw my vision at night. In the vision the wind was blowing from all four directions. These winds made the sea rough. I saw four big animals and each one was different from the others. These four animals came up out of the sea.

“I, Daniel, was confused and worried. The visions that went through my mind bothered me. I went to someone who was standing there and asked him what all this meant. So he explained it to me. He said, ‘The four great animals are four kingdoms that will come from the earth. But God’s holy people will receive the kingdom, and they will have the kingdom forever and ever.’

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path

Psalm 149

Sing the Lord’s praise in the assembly of the faithful. (Ps. 149:1)

Praise the Lord!
Sing a new song to the Lord!
    Sing his praise in the assembly of his followers.

Let Israel be happy with their Maker.
    Let the people of Zion rejoice with their King.

Let them praise him by dancing
    and playing their tambourines and harps.

The Lord is happy with his people.
    He did a wonderful thing for his humble people.
    He saved them!

Let his followers rejoice in this victory!
    Let them sing for joy, even in their beds!

Let the people shout praise to God.
    And with a sharp sword in their hand,

     let them take revenge on the other nations.
    Let them go punish those people.

They will put their kings in chains
    and their leaders in chains of iron.

They will punish those nations as God commanded.
    This is an honor for all his followers.

Praise the Lord!

Second Reading: Ephesians 1:11-23

After giving thanks for the faith of the Ephesians, the writer of this letter prays that they might understand the wisdom, hope, and power of God that is embodied in Jesus Christ.

In Christ we were chosen to be God’s people. God had already planned for us to be his people, because that is what he wanted. And he is the one who makes everything agree with what he decides and wants. We Jews were the first to hope in Christ. And we were chosen so that we would bring praise to God in all his glory. It is the same with you. You heard the true message, the Good News about the way God saves you. When you heard that Good News, you believed in Christ. And in Christ, God put his special mark on you by giving you the Holy Spirit that he promised. The Spirit is the first payment that guarantees we will get all that God has for us. Then we will enjoy complete freedom as people who belong to him. The goal for all of us is the praise of God in all his glory.

That is why I always remember you in my prayers and thank God for you. I have done this ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all of God’s people. I always pray to the great and glorious Father, the God of our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that he will give you the Spirit, who will let you know truths about God and help you understand them, so that you will know him better.

I pray that God will open your minds to see his truth. Then you will know the hope that he has chosen us to have. You will know that the blessings God has promised his holy people are rich and glorious. And you will know that God’s power is very great for us who believe. It is the same as the mighty power he used to raise Christ from death and put him at his right side in the heavenly places. He put Christ over all rulers, authorities, powers, and kings. He gave him authority over everything that has power in this world or in the next world. God put everything under Christ’s power and made him head over everything for the church. The church is Christ’s body. It is filled with him. He makes everything complete in every way.

Word of God, Word of Life!

Thanks Be to God!

Together in One Spirit

Rejoicing in His word.

All created equal,

Together we belong.

Gospel: Luke 6:20-31

In echoes of the prophet Isaiah and Mary’s song of praise, Jesus reveals surprising things about who enjoys blessing and who endures woe. He invites his disciples to shower radical love, blessing, forgiveness, generosity, and trust even on enemies and outsiders.

Jesus looked at his followers and said,

“Great blessings belong to you who are poor.
    God’s kingdom belongs to you.
Great blessings belong to you who are hungry now.
    You will be filled.
Great blessings belong to you who are crying now.
    You will be happy and laughing.

“People will hate you because you belong to the Son of Man. They will make you leave their group. They will insult you. They will think it is wrong even to say your name. When these things happen, know that great blessings belong to you. You can be happy then and jump for joy, because you have a great reward in heaven. The ancestors of those people did the same things to the prophets.

“But how bad it will be for you rich people,
    because you had your easy life.
How bad it will be for you people who are full now,
    because you will be hungry.
How bad it will be for you people who are laughing now,
    because you will be sad and cry.

“How bad it is when everyone says nothing but good about you. Just look at the false prophets. Their ancestors always said good things about them.

“But I say to you people who are listening to me, love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. Ask God to bless the people who ask for bad things to happen to you. Pray for the people who are mean to you. If someone hits you on the side of your face, let them hit the other side too. If someone takes your coat, don’t stop them from taking your shirt too. Give to everyone who asks you for something. When someone takes something that is yours, don’t ask for it back. Do for others what you want them to do for you.

Praise to You O Christ

Be Thou My Vision

1     Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;

        naught be all else to me, save that thou art:

        thou my best thought by day and by night,

        waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

2     Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word;

        I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord.

        Thou my soul’s shelter, thou my high tower,

        raise thou me heav’nward, O Pow’r of my pow’r.

3     Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise,

        thou mine inheritance, now and always:

        thou, and thou only, first in my heart,

        great God of heaven, my treasure thou art.

4     Light of my soul, after victory won,

        may I reach heaven’s joys, O heaven’s Sun!

        Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,

        still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Prayers of the People

Gathered with one voice, we offer our prayers for the church, the world, and all who are in need.

A brief silence.

God of all that is, delight in the praises of your people and revive the spirit of your church. Move through us with boldness so that we proclaim the gospel of Christ throughout the world. Renew and revive pastors, deacons, and lay leaders. God of Grace,

Hear our prayer.

God of the beginning, give us the courage to advocate for environmental policy that will ensure a viable future for generations to come. Restore desolate places to health and flourishing. God of Grace,

Hear our prayer.

God of all our days, guide the leaders of governments, nations, municipalities, and all those seeking office. Accompany election officials and volunteers. Dismantle injustice and oppression wherever it is found. God of Grace,

Hear our prayer.

God of comfort in troubled times, we pray for those in need of protection and care. Come alongside all who are ill or struggling. By your grace, make your presence known among all who call to you for healing. We remember any who are sick or suffering those named in our prayer bowl, those on our prayer list, and those we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts. (PAUSE)  Trusting that you are constant in mercy, protect those who seek safety and solace. God of Grace,

Hear our prayer.

God of what is yet to come, encourage and inspire those who give their time, talent, and treasure in service to your church. By their commitment, further the work of ministry in this place and uplift your gospel. God of Grace,

Hear our prayer.

Please feel free to offer other petitions at this time.  (PAUSE) God of Grace,

Hear our prayer.

God of time and space, we give thanks for the faithful departed especially our sister Marti and others we now name before you aloud or in the silence of our hearts. Sustain us in hope of our eternal unity in Christ. God of Grace,

We offer these and all our prayers to you, O God, trusting in your grace and unyielding love; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

God Extends an Invitation

Nuestro Padre nos invita

God extends an invitation

to the table of creation,

where there's wine and light and bread.

Here we gather in thanksgiving

and we offer all our living.

Here the feast of life is spread;

here the feast of life is spread.

Nuestro Padre nos invita

a la mesa de la vida,

donde hay vino, luz y pan;

y nosotros nos reunimos,

y lo nuestro compartimos,

pues así es la comunión;

pues así es la comunión.

The Words of Institution

P: In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread,

and gave thanks; broke it,

and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

After supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

shed for you and for all people

for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

With this bread and cup,

we remember Christ’s life among us;

his association with outcasts,

his eating with sinners,

his healing of the sick,

his care for the poor.

Send, we pray, your Holy Spirit

upon us and upon this bread and wine,

that we who share this meal

may become a holy communion,

the body of Christ in the world.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.
