Independence and Interdependence: God is in Control! Rejoice!
Gospel: Mark 5:21-43 Second Reading 2 Corinthians 8:7-15
Both Canada Day (July 1) and US Independence Day (July 4) hold significant places in the hearts of their respective countries’ citizenry, appropriately celebrating their independence and freedom (including freedom of religion). Today’s readings, though, point out ways we are not as “free” as we may think. The gospel shows that we are never independent of God’s providence and mercy. How does this make us feel?
In our American culture, we pride ourselves with our independence and self-driven attitude. I’m not knocking this entirely. Sometimes in life, our prowess can really take us far, and sometimes really the only person we can really rely on is our own strength and will. However, here is the Good News. Whether we find success in this self-driven will towards our ambitions, or we are met with some failures, GOD IS IN CONTROL!!! In our perspective we think we have independence and control, but God is omnipotent (all knowing), the Alpha and the Omega (beginning and the end). God directs all our steps and knows all our ways and will love and care for us and direct our path, which is always good no matter what comes. Place your faith in Jesus Christ, our Living Lord and Savior and God.
While 2 Corinthians highlights our interdependence with one another in the body of Christ, the church. Yes, the English poet and statesman said No Man Is an Island. No man is an island, Entire of itself; Every man is a piece of the continent, A part of the main. We are entirely dependent on one another. Our cities, society, and lives are built off relationships and services we do for one another whether paid or voluntary. But God just does not expect us to have quid pro quo relationships, but actual care and concern for other people, not just those who do something for us.
As Independence Days approaches for both Canadians and Americans, how can we see our independence and interdependence as God’s gifts to us. How can we use both to advance and grow God’s Kingdom?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, please help us to understand. You are in control. Guide us. Love us. In Jesus most Holy name we pray, Amen.
