Fifth Sunday of Easter

Introduction

As we continue to celebrate the fifty days of Easter, today’s gospel includes Jesus’ promise that he goes to prepare a place for his followers in his Father’s house. Our baptism commissions us to share Jesus’ mission in the world. As 1 Peter reminds us, we are a holy people, called to proclaim the one who called us out of darkness into light. In words and deeds we bear witness to the risen Christ—our way, our truth, our life.

Remember Your Baptism

GOD WELCOMES ALL

God welcomes all, strangers and friends; God's love is strong and it never ends.

Shout to the Lord

My Jesus, my Savior,

Lord, there is none like you.

All of my days I want to praise

the wonders of your mighty love.

My comfort, my shelter,

tower of refuge and strength;

let ev'ry breath, all that I am

never cease to worship you.

Shout to the Lord, all the earth, let us sing

power and majesty, praise to the King.

Mountains bow down and the seas will roar

at the sound of your name.

I sing for joy at the work of your hands;

forever I'll love you, forever I'll stand.

Nothing compares to the promise I have in you.

Prayer of the Day

Almighty God, your Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Give us grace to love one another, to follow in the way of his commandments, and to share his risen life with all the world, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

For Such a Time as This

Could it be (could it be) that we were born

for such a time as this?

Could it be (could it be) that we were born

for such a time as this?

First Reading: Acts 7:55-60

Stephen was one of the seven men chosen by the apostles to serve tables so that the apostles could be free to serve the word (Acts 6:1-6). Stephen does more than distribute food, however. For his preaching of God’s word, he becomes the first martyr of the faith.

But Stephen was full of the Holy Spirit. He looked up into heaven and saw the glory of God. And he saw Jesus standing at God’s right side. Stephen said, “Look! I see heaven open. And I see the Son of Man standing at God’s right side.”

Everyone there started shouting loudly, covering their ears with their hands. Together they all ran at Stephen. They took him out of the city and began throwing stones at him. The men who told lies against Stephen gave their coats to a young man named Saul. As they were throwing the stones at him, Stephen was praying. He said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!” He fell on his knees and shouted, “Lord, don’t blame them for this sin!” These were his last words before he died.

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path

Psalm: 31:1-5, 15-16

Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. (Ps. 31:5)

Lord, I come to you for protection.

    Don’t let me be disappointed.

    You always do what is right, so save me.

    Listen to me.

    Come quickly and save me.

Be my Rock, my place of safety.

    Be my fortress and protect me!

Yes, you are my Rock and my protection.

    For the good of your name, lead me and guide me.

Save me from the traps my enemy has set.

    You are my place of safety.

Lord, you are the God we can trust.

    I put my life in your hands.

    Save me!

My life is in your hands.

    Save me from those who are persecuting me.

Please welcome and accept your servant.

    Be kind to me and save me.

Thy Word is a Lamp

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path

Second Reading: 1 Peter 2:2-10

Christ is the cornerstone of God’s saving work and the foundation of our lives. We are God’s chosen, holy people who continuously celebrate and declare the mercy of God we experience through Jesus Christ.

Like newborn babies hungry for milk, you should want the pure teaching that feeds your spirit. With it you can grow up and be saved. You have already tasted the goodness of the Lord.

The Lord Jesus is the living stone. The people of the world decided that they did not want this stone. But he is the one God chose as one of great value. So come to him. You also are like living stones, and God is using you to build a spiritual house. You are to serve God in this house as holy priests, offering him spiritual sacrifices that he will accept because of Jesus Christ. The Scriptures say,

“Look, I have chosen a cornerstone of great value,
    and I put that stone in Zion.
Anyone who trusts in him will never be disappointed.”

So, that stone brings honor for you who believe. But for those who don’t believe he is

“the stone that the builders refused to accept,
    which became the most important stone.”

For them he is also

“a stone that makes people stumble,
    a rock that makes people fall.”

People stumble because they don’t obey what God says. This is what God planned to happen to those people.

But you are his chosen people, the King’s priests. You are a holy nation, people who belong to God. He chose you to tell about the wonderful things he has done. He brought you out of the darkness of sin into his wonderful light.

In the past you were not a special people,
    but now you are God’s people.
Once you had not received mercy,
    but now God has given you his mercy.

Word of God, Word of Life!

Thanks Be to God!

Gospel: John 14:1-14

On the night that he is to be arrested, Jesus shares final words with his disciples. As the one through whom God is known, he promises to go before them and act on their behalf.

Jesus said, “Don’t be troubled. Trust in God, and trust in me. There are many rooms in my Father’s house. I would not tell you this if it were not true. I am going there to prepare a place for you. After I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back. Then I will take you with me, so that you can be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Thomas said, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. The only way to the Father is through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father too. But now you know the Father. You have seen him.”

Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father. That is all we need.”

Jesus answered, “Philip, I have been with you for a long time. So you should know me. Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father too. So why do you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The things I have told you don’t come from me. The Father lives in me, and he is doing his own work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or believe because of the miracles I have done.

“I can assure you that whoever believes in me will do the same things I have done. And they will do even greater things than I have done, because I am going to the Father. And if you ask for anything in my name, I will do it for you. Then the Father’s glory will be shown through the Son. If you ask me for anything in my name, I will do it.

Sanctuary

Lord prepare me to be a sanctuary

pure and holy, tried and true

with thanksgiving I'll be a living

Sanctuary for you.

Lord forgive me for I'm unworthy

of your perfect love and grace.

Walk beside me and hold my hand lord,

for I am longing to see your face.

Lord prepare me to be a sanctuary

pure and holy, tried and true

with thanksgiving I'll be a living

Sanctuary for you.

When you come and shouts of glory

and our work on Earth is done,

how I long to hear you saying,

“Faithful servant, well done.”

Lord prepare me to be a sanctuary

pure and holy, tried and true

with thanksgiving I'll be a living

Sanctuary for you.

Prayers of the People

Trusting in the power of Christ’s resurrection to heal and redeem our broken world, let us pray for the needs of all creation.

A brief silence.

God of glory, you have built your church on Christ the cornerstone. Inspire lay leaders, deacons, pastors, and bishops to proclaim forgiveness and your steadfast love to all whom they encounter. God of grace,

hear our prayer.

God of majesty, you bring forth plants and animals, skies and seas, mountains and valleys. Protect all you have made from the ravages of pollution and climate disaster. God of grace,

hear our prayer.

God of mercy, you intend governments and social service agencies to be instruments of peace and justice. Guide political leaders and organizations to be agents of compassion, and raise up advocates for those who seek refuge and assistance. God of grace,

hear our prayer.

God of well-being, you soothe those in distress, console all who grieve, provide for any in need, and comfort those who are sick.  Come alongside all who are ill or struggling. By your grace, make your presence known among all who call to you for healing. We remember any who are sick or suffering those named in our prayer bowl, those on our prayer list, and those we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts. (PAUSE).   Instill caregivers with a sense of purpose to be your healing hands in this world. God of grace,

hear our prayer.

God of community, you call us together as your people for mutual support and to witness to your love in the world. Make your presence known among those unable to attend worship today. God of grace,

hear our prayer.

Please feel free to offer other petitions at this time.  (PAUSE)  God of grace,

hear our prayer.

God of eternal life, you have prepared dwelling places for your people, so that we are never separated from you. We give you thanks for the faithful departed who witnessed to your mighty acts in word and deed. God of grace,

hear our prayer.

God of resurrection power, use us and these prayers to proclaim the good news of new life to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our risen Savior.

Amen.

God Extends an Invitation

Nuestro Padre nos invita

God extends an invitation

to the table of creation,

where there's wine and light and bread.

Here we gather in thanksgiving

and we offer all our living.

Here the feast of life is spread;

here the feast of life is spread.

Nuestro Padre nos invita

a la mesa de la vida,

donde hay vino, luz y pan;

y nosotros nos reunimos,

y lo nuestro compartimos,

pues así es la comunión;

pues así es la comunión.

The Words of Institution

P: In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread,

and gave thanks; broke it,

and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

After supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

shed for you and for all people

for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

With this bread and cup,

we remember Christ’s life among us;

his association with outcasts,

his eating with sinners,

his healing of the sick,

his care for the poor.

Send, we pray, your Holy Spirit

upon us and upon this bread and wine,

that we who share this meal

may become a holy communion,

the body of Christ in the world.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

Shepherding God, you have prepared a table before us and nourished us with your love. Send us forth from this banquet to proclaim your goodness and share the abundant mercy of Jesus, our redeemer and friend.
