2nd Sunday after Pentecost

Introduction

Though Jesus was a devout Jew who practiced his faith, he was criticized for eating with tax collectors and sinners—the religiously nonobservant. Jesus criticizes the self-righteous and reminds us that mercy is to be at the heart of our religious practices. God continues to be made known in those on the margins of society, like Matthew the tax collector and the hemorrhaging woman. As we gather each Lord’s day we receive the healing that makes us well and sends us forth to be signs of God’s mercy for the world.

Remember Your Baptism

GOD WELCOMES ALL

God welcomes all, strangers and friends; God's love is strong and it never ends.

Shout to the Lord

My Jesus, my Saviour
Lord there is none like You
All of my days I want to praise
The wonders of Your mighty love

My comfort, my shelter
Tower of refuge and strength
Let every breath, all that I am
Never cease to worship You

Shout to the Lord all the Earth, let us sing
Power and majesty, praise to the King
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of Your name

I sing for joy at the work of Your hands
Forever I'll love You, forever I'll stand
Nothing compares to the promise I have
In You

My Jesus, my Saviour
Lord there is none like You
All of my days I want to praise
The wonders of Your mighty love

My comfort
My shelter
Tower of refuge and strength
Let every breath, all that I am
Never cease to worship You

Shout to the Lord all the Earth, let us sing
Power and majesty, praise to the King
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of Your name

I sing for joy at the work of Your hands
Forever I'll love You, forever I'll stand
Nothing compares to the promise I have
In You

For Such a Time as This

Could it be (could it be) that we were born

for such a time as this?

Could it be (could it be) that we were born

for such a time as this?

First Reading: Hosea 5:15—6:6

Because the people have trusted in military powers and not God, God decides to withdraw from the scene until Israel acknowledges its guilt and seeks God’s face. The response of the people does not acknowledge this guilt and is as fickle as fog or dew burned away quickly by the sun. God desires loyalty rather than words or meaningless deeds.

I will go back to my place,
until the people admit they are guilty,
until they come looking for me.
Yes, in their trouble they will try very hard to find me.”

“Come, let’s go back to the Lord.
He hurt us, but he will heal us.
He wounded us, but he will put bandages on us.
After two days he will bring us back to life.
He will raise us up on the third day.
Then we can live near him.
Let’s learn about the Lord.
Let’s try very hard to know him.
We know he is coming,
just as we know the dawn is coming.
He will come to us like the rain,
like the spring rain that waters the ground.”

“Ephraim, what should I do with you?
Judah, what should I do with you?
Your faithfulness is like a morning mist.
Your faithfulness is like the dew that goes away early in the morning.
I used the prophets
and made laws for the people.
The people were killed at my command,
but good things will come from those decisions.
This is because I want faithful love,
    not sacrifice.
I want people to know God,
    not to bring burnt offerings.

Psalm: Psalm 50:7-15

Call upon me in the day of trouble, says your God. (Ps. 50:15)

God says, “My people, listen to me!
People of Israel, I will show my evidence against you.
    I am God, your God.

The problem I have with you is not your sacrifices
or the burnt offerings you bring to me everyday.

Why would I want more bulls from your barns
    or goats from your pens?

I already own all the animals in the forest.
I own all the animals on a thousand hills.

I know every bird in the mountains.
Everything that moves in the fields is mine.

If I were hungry, I would not ask you for food.
I already own the world and everything in it. I don’t eat the meat of bulls or drink the blood of goats.”

You made promises to God Most High, so give him what you promised.
Bring your sacrifices and thank offerings.

God says, “Call me when trouble comes.
I will help you, and you will honor me.”

Second Reading: Romans 4:13-25

Paul presents Abraham as a living model of right relationships. For Abraham and for us, a right relationship with God involves trusting that God’s promises will be fulfilled because God makes the dead alive and calls into existence what otherwise does not exist.

Abraham and his descendants received the promise that they would get the whole world. But Abraham did not receive that promise because he followed the law. He received that promise because he was right with God through his faith. If people could get God’s promise by following the law, then faith is worthless. And God’s promise to Abraham is worthless, because the law can only bring God’s anger on those who disobey it. But if there is no law, then there is nothing to disobey.

So people get what God promised by having faith. This happens so that the promise can be a free gift. And if the promise is a free gift, then all of Abraham’s people will get that promise. The promise is not just for those who live under the Law of Moses. It is for all who live with faith as Abraham did. He is the father of us all. As the Scriptures say, “I have made you a father of many nations.” This is true before God, the one Abraham believed—the God who gives life to the dead and speaks of things that don’t yet exist as if they are real.

There was no hope that Abraham would have children, but Abraham believed God and continued to hope. And that is why he became the father of many nations. As God told him, “You will have many descendants.” Abraham was almost a hundred years old, so he was past the age for having children. Also, Sarah could not have children. Abraham was well aware of this, but his faith in God never became weak. He never doubted that God would do what he promised. He never stopped believing. In fact, he grew stronger in his faith and just praised God. Abraham felt sure that God was able to do what he promised. So that’s why “he was accepted as one who is right with God.” These words (“he was accepted”) were written not only for Abraham. They were also written for us. God will also accept us because we believe. We believe in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from death. Jesus was handed over to die for our sins, and he was raised from death to make us right with God.

Gospel: Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26

Jesus demonstrates God’s mercy and power, accepting the unacceptable and curing the incurable. Even the dead receive new life.

When Jesus was leaving, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the place for collecting taxes. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.” So he got up and followed Jesus.

Jesus ate dinner at Matthew’s house. Many tax collectors and others with bad reputations came and ate with him and his followers. The Pharisees saw that Jesus was eating with these people. They asked his followers, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and other sinners?”

Jesus heard them say this. So he said to them, “It is the sick people who need a doctor, not those who are healthy. You need to go and learn what this Scripture means: ‘I don’t want animal sacrifices; I want you to show kindness to people.’ I did not come to invite good people. I came to invite sinners.”

While Jesus was still talking, a leader of the synagogue came to him. The leader bowed down before him and said, “My daughter has just died. But if you will come and touch her with your hand, she will live again.”

So Jesus and his followers went with the man.

On the way, there was a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years. She came close behind Jesus and touched the bottom of his coat. She was thinking, “If I can touch his coat, I will be healed.”

Jesus turned and saw the woman. He said, “Be happy, dear woman. You are made well because you believed.” Then the woman was healed.

Jesus continued going with the Jewish leader and went into the leader’s house. He saw people there who make music for funerals. And he saw a crowd of people crying loudly. Jesus said, “Go away. The girl is not dead. She is only sleeping.” But the people laughed at him. After the people were put out of the house, Jesus went into the girl’s room. He held the girl’s hand, and the girl stood up. The news about this spread all around the area.

Thy Word is a Lamp

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path

(Repeat)

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty!

1      Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty!

Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.

Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!

God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

2      Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,

        casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;

cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,

which wert and art, and evermore shalt be.

3      Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,

though the eye of sinfulness thy glory may not see,

only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,

perfect in pow'r, in love and purity.

4      Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea.

Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!

God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Prayers of the People

Gathered together by the Holy Spirit, let us pray for the church and the needs of the world.

A brief silence.

God of mercy, you call us to a life filled with acts of mercy. Ground us in following Christ, that we might extend the mercy we receive. God of grace,

hear our prayer.

God of creation, all you have made is yours. Revive lands in need of healing and make us wise stewards of all you have given us to tend. God of grace,

hear our prayer.

God of the nations, you promise to deliver those who call on you. Bring an end to conflict, bigotry, and injustice in all their forms wherever they are found. God of grace,

hear our prayer.

God of comfort, you provide for those in need. Bring an end to addiction. Comfort people as they mourn. Provide tenderly for those in need. Come alongside all who are ill or struggling. By your grace, make your presence known among all who call to you for healing. We remember any who are sick or suffering those named in our prayer bowl, those on our prayer list, and those we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts. (PAUSE). God of grace,

hear our prayer.

God of blessings, you send the Holy Spirit to provide varieties of gifts in the body of Christ. Accompany those who travel this summer, make our gatherings joyous, and grant us a spirit of hospitality and togetherness. God of grace,

hear our prayer.

Please feel free to offer other petitions at this time.  (PAUSE)  God of grace,

hear our prayer.

God of life, we give you thanks for saints whose lives revealed your faithfulness. May remembering their faithfulness strengthen our own. God of grace,

hear our prayer.

Trusting you receive all our prayers, we commend our spoken and unspoken prayers to you, O God, through Jesus our Savior.

Amen.

God Extends an Invitation

Nuestro Padre nos invita

God extends an invitation

to the table of creation,

where there's wine and light and bread.

Here we gather in thanksgiving

and we offer all our living.

Here the feast of life is spread;

here the feast of life is spread.

Nuestro Padre nos invita

a la mesa de la vida,

donde hay vino, luz y pan;

y nosotros nos reunimos,

y lo nuestro compartimos,

pues así es la comunión;

pues así es la comunión.

The Words of Institution

P: In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread,

and gave thanks; broke it,

and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

After supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

shed for you and for all people

for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

With this bread and cup,

we remember Christ’s life among us;

his association with outcasts,

his eating with sinners,

his healing of the sick,

his care for the poor.

Send, we pray, your Holy Spirit

upon us and upon this bread and wine,

that we who share this meal

may become a holy communion,

the body of Christ in the world.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.
