Reformation Sunday

Introduction

Rooted in the past and growing into the future, the church must always be reformed in order to live out the love of Christ in an ever-changing world. We celebrate the good news of God’s grace, that Jesus Christ sets us free every day to do this life-transforming work. Trusting in the freedom given to us in baptism, we pray for the church, that Christians will unite more fully in worship and mission.

Remember Your Baptism

GOD WELCOMES ALL

God welcomes all, strangers and friends; God's love is strong and it never ends.

Prayer of the Day

Almighty God, gracious Lord, we thank you that your Holy Spirit renews the church in every age. Pour out your Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep them steadfast in your word, protect and comfort them in times of trial, defend them against all enemies of the gospel, and bestow on the church your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

For Such a Time as This

for such a time as this?

Could it be (could it be) that we were born

for such a time as this?

First Reading: Jeremiah 31:31-34

The renewed covenant will not be breakable, but like the old covenant it will expect the people to live upright lives. To know the Lord means that one will defend the cause of the poor and needy (Jer. 22:16). The renewed covenant is possible only because the Lord will forgive iniquity and not remember sin. Our hope lies in a God who forgets.

This is what the Lord said, “The time is coming when I will make a new agreement with the family of Israel and with the family of Judah. It will not be like the agreement I made with their ancestors. I made that agreement when I took them by the hand and brought them out of Egypt. I was their master, but they broke that agreement.” This message is from the Lord.

“In the future I will make this agreement with the people of Israel.” This message is from the Lord. “I will put my teachings in their minds, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. People will not have to teach their neighbors and relatives to know the Lord, because all people, from the least important to the most important, will know me.” This message is from the Lord. “I will forgive them for the evil things they did. I will not remember their sins.”

Thy Word is a Lamp

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path

Psalm 46

The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. (Ps. 46:7)

God is our protection and source of strength.
He is always ready to help us in times of trouble.

So we are not afraid when the earth quakes
and the mountains fall into the sea.

We are not afraid when the seas become rough and dark
and the mountains tremble. Selah

There is a river whose streams bring happiness to God’s city,
to the holy city of God Most High.

God is in that city, so it will never be destroyed.
He is there to help even before sunrise.

Nations will shake with fear and kingdoms will fall
when God shouts and makes the earth move.

The Lord All-Powerful is with us.
The God of Jacob is our place of safety. Selah

Look at the powerful things the Lord has done.
See the awesome things he has done on earth.

He stops wars all over the world.
He breaks the soldiers’ bows, shatters their spears, and burns their shields.

God says, “Stop fighting and know that I am God!
I am the one who defeats the nations;
I am the one who controls the world.”

The Lord All-Powerful is with us.
The God of Jacob is our place of safety.

Thy Word is a Lamp

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path

Second Reading:

Romans 3:19-28

Paul’s words stand at the heart of the preaching of Martin Luther and other Reformation leaders. No human beings make themselves right with God through works of the law. We are brought into a right relationship with God through the divine activity centered in Christ’s death. This act is a gift of grace that liberates us from sin and empowers our faith in Jesus Christ.

What the law says is for those who are under the law. It stops anyone from making excuses. And it brings the whole world under God’s judgment, because no one can be made right with God by following the law. The law only shows us our sin.

But God has a way to make people right, and it has nothing to do with the law. He has now shown us that new way, which the law and the prophets told us about. God makes people right through their faith in Jesus Christ. He does this for all who believe in Christ. Everyone is the same. All have sinned and are not good enough to share God’s divine greatness. They are made right with God by his grace. This is a free gift. They are made right with God by being made free from sin through Jesus Christ. God gave Jesus as a way to forgive people’s sins through their faith in him. God can forgive them because the blood sacrifice of Jesus pays for their sins. God gave Jesus to show that he always does what is right and fair. He was right in the past when he was patient and did not punish people for their sins. And in our own time he still does what is right. God worked all this out in a way that allows him to judge people fairly and still make right any person who has faith in Jesus.

So do we have any reason to boast about ourselves? No reason at all. And why not? Because we are depending on the way of faith, not on what we have done in following the law. I mean we are made right with God through faith, not through what we have done to follow the law. This is what we believe.

Together in One Spirit

One church, One body

One faith, One Lord

Together in one Spirit

Rejoicing in His word.

One church, One body

Together in one Spirit

Rejoicing in His word.

All created equal,

Together we belong.

United in one body,

Rejoicing in one song.

Together in one Spirit

Rejoicing in His word.

All created equal,

Together we belong.

United in one body,

Rejoicing in one song.

Gospel: John 8:31-36

Jesus speaks of truth and freedom as spiritual realities known through his word. He reveals the truth that sets people free from sin.

So Jesus said to the Jews who believed in him, “If you continue to accept and obey my teaching, you are really my followers. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

They answered, “We are Abraham’s descendants. And we have never been slaves. So why do you say that we will be free?”

Jesus said, “The truth is, everyone who sins is a slave—a slave to sin. A slave does not stay with a family forever. But a son belongs to the family forever. So if the Son makes you free, you are really free.

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

1      A mighty fortress is our God,

        a sword and shield victorious;

        he breaks the cruel oppressor's rod

        and wins salvation glorious.

        The old satanic foe

        has sworn to work us woe!

        With craft and dreadful might

        he arms himself to fight.

        On earth he has no equal.

2      No strength of ours can match his might!

        We would be lost, rejected.

        But now a champion comes to fight,

        whom God himself elected.

        You ask who this may be?

        The Lord of hosts is he!

        Christ Jesus, mighty Lord,

        God's only Son, adored.

        He holds the field victorious.

3      Though hordes of devils fill the land

        all threat'ning to devour us,

        we tremble not, unmoved we stand;

        they cannot overpow'r us.

        Let this world's tyrant rage;

        in battle we'll engage!

        His might is doomed to fail;

        God's judgment must prevail!

        One little word subdues him.

4      God's Word forever shall abide,

        no thanks to foes, who fear it;

        for God himself fights by our side

        with weapons of the Spirit.

        Were they to take our house,

        goods, honor, child, or spouse,

        though life be wrenched away,

        they cannot win the day.

        The kingdom's ours forever!

Prayers of the People

Seeking the Spirit of God who makes all things new, we pray for the church and the world.

A brief silence.

As we celebrate Reformation Sunday, we remember the witness of Martin Luther and the reformers of the church in every generation. Empower us to continue the work of reform and renewal in our own day. God of Grace,

hear our prayer.

We pray for the healing of natural places despoiled by pollution and human greed. Give all living creatures access to safe land, water, and air. God of Grace,

hear our prayer.

We pray for our criminal justice systems and all those whose lives are affected by them. Give wisdom and discernment to police, probation officers, judges, and attorneys; give courage and peace to prisoners and the formerly incarcerated. God of Grace,

hear our prayer.

We ask your blessing upon all people who have been harmed by the church and its leaders, that the truth may make them free. Come alongside all who are ill or struggling. By your grace, make your presence known among all who call to you for healing. We remember any who are sick or suffering those named in our prayer bowl, those on our prayer list, and those we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts. (PAUSE). God of Grace,

hear our prayer.

We give thanks for those exploring or returning to a life of faith. Encourage and guide them, that they may find their hope in you. God of Grace,

hear our prayer.

Please feel free to offer other petitions at this time.  (PAUSE)  God of grace,

hear our prayer.

With gratitude, we remember those disciples who paved the way for us and all of our beloved dead.  God of Grace,

hear our prayer.

Trusting in your boundless grace, O God, we lift up these spoken prayers and those in our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

God Extends an Invitation

Nuestro Padre nos invita

God extends an invitation

to the table of creation,

where there's wine and light and bread.

Here we gather in thanksgiving

and we offer all our living.

Here the feast of life is spread;

here the feast of life is spread.

Nuestro Padre nos invita

a la mesa de la vida,

donde hay vino, luz y pan;

y nosotros nos reunimos,

y lo nuestro compartimos,

pues así es la comunión;

pues así es la comunión.

The Words of Institution

P: In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread,

and gave thanks; broke it,

and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

After supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

shed for you and for all people

for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

With this bread and cup,

we remember Christ’s life among us;

his association with outcasts,

his eating with sinners,

his healing of the sick,

his care for the poor.

Send, we pray, your Holy Spirit

upon us and upon this bread and wine,

that we who share this meal

may become a holy communion,

the body of Christ in the world.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.
